Outline for The Invisible Hand

I’ve decided to write more.

To this end I am setting myself on a project. It will not be a novel, but the end product will be a book-length collection of related short stories.

The goal of the project is to write stories into which I can put a bit of warm blood. If for no other reason than to keep me writing. On s’en fout; on a la temps.

The project of the now is workingtitled The Invisible Hand. Or perhaps Memoirs of an Invisible Hand. Or some such.

It is to be a collection of short pieces each sharing a common protagonist. It contains some of the stories that I’ve written over the past few years – to be flushed out with other stories, and interstories.

The stories are to fall into four categories: ANECDOTES, ADVENTURES, ARRESTS, and ARRAIGNMENTS. Stories from each of these categories will be interspersed, thus that the final book is greater than the sum of, &c.

ANECDOTES: each will each have their own unique title. These are stories that could each of them stand alone.

ADVENTURES: not to be given unique titles- all are just “Adventure.” To be presented in chronological order. Could be read by themselves as a linear narrative.

ARRESTS: not to be given unique titles. To be presented out of chronological order.

ARRAIGNMENTS: to be given partial unique titles (“Arraignment in Pink,” “Arraignment for Orchestra,” etc.). To be presented out of chronological order.

…it is possible that I shall combine the ARREST and ARRAIGNMENT categories; or else, try to differentiate them more substantively.

At the moment, the collection contains the following works:

Appraisal – https://warspite.wordpress.com/2011/04/19/appraisal/

Arbitrage – https://warspite.wordpress.com/2010/06/14/arbitrage/

Authentic – https://warspite.wordpress.com/2011/07/12/authentic/

Acquisition – https://warspite.wordpress.com/2013/03/14/acquisition/

Advantage – https://warspite.wordpress.com/2013/04/07/advantage/

I have notes for three further anecdotes, eleven adventures, four arrests, and six arraignments. I expect the anecdotes will run four to eight thousand words, while the stories in the other categories one to two thousand. Which would put the entire collection around eighty thousand.

This first Adventure is rather getting away from me – it might end up becoming a full anecdote. I’m not sure. Or I could just trim it back mercilessly. That’s always possible.

Here, then, is my outline. But I can mix and match once I have a body of stories on paper. For the moment, it is to get them on paper. That’s the work.
